Goddess Hekate is a lunar Goddess from antiquity. It was identified with Selene (the Moon Goddess) and Artemis, who represents the lunar light. We also know that Hekate is also related to Magick, Necromancy and the world of the dead, Hades. Those areas were connected in ancient Hellenic religion, mainly in the parts that were available for the initiates of the mysteries. In this article, I will use Plutarch's work On The Apparent Face On The Circle of The Moon and my Platonic background. Plutarchos was a High Priest/Hierophant in Delphi and a Middle-Platonic philosopher, so he is "our guy" for understanding ancient Hellenic religion.

The mansions of the Moon appear around the 10th-century a.C. in the Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology, written by Abu’l-Rayhan Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Al-Biruni. At that time we also see them on Picatrix, the main source of Medieval and Renaissance Astrological Magic. This book was translated in Latin at the 13th-century a.C. In Picatrix, we see the use of the Mansions in the first book, which is based in Zodiologion of the Hindus and we also find them in the fourth book based in Pliny’s book Zodiologion. Pliny the Elder was a natural philosopher, who lived in the 1st-century A.C.We don’t have the text of Pliny, but we have Picatrix, which is a manual that combines teachings from different astrological magickal texts of antiquity. Picatrix’s lunar mansions were also used by Henry Cornelius Agrippa.

This is the first article on a series of Lunar Magick or Magick of the Moon. In Witchcraft, the energy of the moon is basically restricted in the lunar light aspect, but in the series, we are going to expand this very basic knowledge to other aspects too. As Hekate is the Goddess of the Moon and the Goddess of Magick, I think that all of Her devotees should know -if not practice, this type of magick, which is considered ancient and Hermetic.

You know the writer Emmanuel Rhoides (1836-1904) from his novel The Papess Joanne, in which he is making fun with the Medieval mistakes of the Catholic church, based on ignorance and lack of education. It made him famous outside the physical borders of Hellas, as the spiritual borders of my country cannot be set. He wrote in a newspaper and then he became a headmaster of two newspapers.

This is an invocation to the Goddess Hekate, I wrote one night being very connected with the Goddess. This is a hymn I intented to give it to the COH team that celebrates Deipnon, but this project didn't materialized due to constraints of the administration. So, I present it here in the safe ground of the Crossroads Witch to be used wisely during deipnon.
Lay down your deipnon in a plate. Light the candles, incense and calm yourself by relaxing the body. Use a brass instrument to make sound. You can use brass jingles for that. You are going to produce sound with three strikes. Make sure you have experimented before with your musical instrument.

Almost a year ago, I wrote an article with Hekate in the G.D. Temple Tarot. It is time to expand it and be more analytical. In this article I am going to focus on the Moon card of the Major Arcana and how the Goddess is related with that card.

The Golden Dawn Temple Tarot is one of a few Golden Dawn Tarot decks that are available for the magickal and tarot community. It is a pure representative of the english school of tarot, the most famous school. This deck is the most recent in its category and maybe the most vivid one. It has been created by Nicola and Harry Wendrich and Nick Farrell, extremelly important personalities. It is available in the Wendrich Art House website (http://www.wendricharthouse.com/shop_gdttd1.htm#b1). The cards have been drawn after esoteric work like meditation, astral projection and total understanding of the Book T of the Golden Dawn Hermetic Tradition.

The Rite of Her Sacred Fires (ROHSF) is an annual celebration honoring the Luminous Goddess of the Crossroads, Hekate. It was written by the very famous Sorita D'Este and performed in Full Moon 2010 for the first time. Sorita created that ceremony after a vision she had. Every year more and more people celebrate the ROHSF from all over the world lighting candles to honor the Goddess Hekate and to express their will for a better understanding of Her Mysteries. Everey year the magickians who perform the Rite put themselves to a global map.
The ceremony has been published in the devotional anthology, "Her Sacred Fires", published by Avalonia Books. It is available online in translation to many languages.

I used the Homeric hymn to Selene, the Orphic hymn to Selene and the Idylls of Theocritus as the main sources of inspiration in order to write the following invocation.

Cleanse your space.
Erect the temple.
Anoint your forehead with pure olive oil shaping a crescent moon.
Make the gesture of invoking/praising.

It amazes me how so many traditions follow these ancient protocols and roles,
