Virtues of the COH

Witchcraft has laws to keep the cosmic balance. Laws lead to ethics and rules of conduct. So, a Witch follows rules and has a good behaviour. In ancient times, Withes were wise people who knew how to manipulate knowledge for the wellness of a community. Their social respected role, lead them close to kings and people of great power.

Nowadays, modern witches follow rules, which are very close to our civilization. Some devotees of Hekate, who belong to the Covenant of Hekate have made a list with five basic virtues, that connect Hekate and her followers.

Rite of Her Sacred Fires

The most well known annual ceremony for honoring the Goddess Hekate. It started in 27th of May 2010 and it is performed every year with great success. Hundrends to thousands of Witches participate in this ritual within the circle, within sacred space, outdoors in the forest, in the mountains, in caves or in a simple desk or in the floor. Some Witches perform this rite as a group, others do it in their privacy at their own.

Correspondences

In Withcraft every living thing has some specific energies. If similar energies could be combined they produce a higher energy and the spell is effective. The connection between plants and crystals, incenses and colors, flowers and feathers... could be achieved through tables of correspondences. It is important to know some basic herbs and crystals by heart and not need to use always the books.
Hekate is a liminal Goddess. She is connected with other Goddesses and some times the connection is so strong that we can say they are the same Goddess. She is connected with all the herbs as teacher of pharmakeia, the art of the herbs for healing, magickal and poisoning purposes. She likes general and special offerings. So, let's see what Hekate likes in general.

Orphic Hymn

Hymns are poems praising the divine and they are used to invoke the God/Goddess in the place in which a ceremony takes place by the Witch of the God/Goddess.

In ancient texts for Hekate we find the first of the orphic hymns the hymn to Hekate (11.835 b.C. or 1366 b.C.). Many years later, Proclus writes an hymn for Hekate and Ianus (400 a.C.). The homeric hymn to Demeter (3000 b.C.)is reffering to Hekate and her power as long as her character. In Greek Magical Papyri (abbreviated PGM) the hymn to Selene is an hymn to Hekate (2nd centrury b.C. to 4rth centrury a.C.). Selene and Hekate were the same Goddess.

He changed profession, raising sheeps. He had two sons. Hesiod was a shepperd until one day the Muses found him in Ellicon and talked to him giving also a wand of bay and the ability to make great poems. After that incident he participated in poetic games in Chalkida of Euvoia and he won a tripod with two handles.

Deipnon

One night before the Dark Moon, in ancient Hellas, food was offered to the Goddess Hekate by all citizens, in public places. Deipna (or suppers in english) were left in theee ways crossroads (triodos), a sacred place for Hekate. The offerings has two meanings, to calm the Goddess in their favor and to protect her followers. Moreover, spirits and ghosts who were wandering this night could find pleasure. The result of this action was that those spirits would not cause troubles in the city.

God Perses

Perses was son of Kreios and Evryvia, grandson of Uranus and Earth and brother of Astraios and Pallas. Kreios means the kingly and drastic energy. Evryvia means the great force and need so that Kreios assigns and Evryvia coerce. Astraios is responsible for the birth of the stars, Pallas for the movement and Persis is responsible for the completion of the movement from east to west.

Goddess Asteria

Asteria was daughter of titans Koios and Phoebe, granddaughter of Ouranus and Earth and sister of Leto who gave birth to Artemis and Apollo. Koios was responsible for the quality of things. His name in ionic dialect is Koios but in aiolic dialect is Poios which means quality (κοῖος = ποῖος = quality). His wife, Phoebe, had the abilities of clearness and diaphaneity. Leto had the abilities of night and lethe and Asteria was responsible for the movement of the stars and their appearance. So quality and diaphaneity born night and stars.

Sacred Eleusis

Introduction

The sacred place of Eleusis, is today the archaeological place of the city, in which in ancient times the Mysteries of Eleusis took place, offering ceremonies, magickal rituals, religious rituals etc. Inside of the arcaeological place there is the hill of Acropolis of Eleusis. In that hill the first houses of Eleusis were built and after many other houses close to them. I am going to describe the main sites of the place with few words, but have in mind that you will not see the 16 meters buildings, because all kind of barbarians have destroyed the place. Walk with me in this tour.

Photos from Eleusis

Pictures that follow have been shot in September of 2015 from the Archaeological Museum of Eleusis. We encourage the devotee of the Goddess to visit Eleusis when he/she will visit Hellas, as in antiquity was a main place for religion and the mysteries. You can find more information on Eleusis to our articles. We suggest Carl Kerrenyi's book and George Mylona's book on Eleusis. Both have been translated in Hellenic.
